How To Use Aldara

March 15th, 2010

Aldara cream has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma (sBCC).  In a number of studies Aldara has reduced carcinomas and related disorders by up to 80%.  However, like any prescription medication, it must be used with care and in strict accordance with your offshore pharmacies physician’s directives.

First, and most importantly, Aldara is for topical use on affected skin areas only.  It should not be placed in or near the mouth, the eyes, the lips, the tongue, or the nostrils.  To do so would cause harmful side effects.  If some of the Aldara cream is accidentally spread into any of these areas immediately rinse with warm water and dry thoroughly.

Use Aldara only on the areas of your body that are afflicted by sBCC.   The majority of the cream should be applied directly on the lesion or growth; however you should also spread the cream further around the borders of the affected area.  This additional spreading should cover an area approximately 1/3 of an inch.

Make sure you strictly follow your offshore pharmacies physician’s instructions regarding duration of use of Aldara cream.  Using the product for a greater time period than prescribed can result in a host of negative side-effects, including severe skin reactions, itching, redness, swelling, and crusty sores.  On the other hand, be sure and consult with your physician as soon as possible if Aldara doesn’t seem to be improving your sBCC, as this may mean that you are not using enough or may need to increase the frequency and duration of treatment.

The most common treatment regimen for sBCC is to apply the Aldara cream once a day for five days.  Aldara cream should be left on for approximately eight hours (most conveniently done while sleeping) and removed with a mild soap and water in the morning.  The duration of treatment is—on average—six weeks, although this may be extended or shortened depending on your individual prognosis.  If the Aldara cream doesn’t appear to be working for you in any way, consult with your physician.

On the other hand, don’t stop using Aldara even if you notice amazing improvement.  You should always complete the six week treatment cycle unless otherwise instructed by your physician.  This is similar to what we are told when taking something like an antibiotic: take it until it is gone, even if you feel better!

Steps to applying Aldara cream:

  1. Aldara cream should be applied just before bedtime.
  2. Wash the affected area with a mild soap and then thoroughly dry the area.
  3. Carefully open the Aldara cream packet and apply it to the affected areas, spreading it a bit beyond the borders of the lesions (as described above).
  4. Again, assiduously avoid getting any of the Aldara cream in your eyes, mouth, nostrils, etc.  If you do accidentally get some cream in any of these areas, immediately rinse thoroughly with water.
  5. Do not cover the treated areas with any type of bandage or lotions.
  6. Throw the Aldara packet away even if there is some left.  Also ensure that children and/or pets cannot get to the discarded packet.
  7. After you have applied the cream, wash your hands with soap and warm water.
  8. Finally, remove the Aldara cream after eight hours by again using soap and warm water.
