Knowing Better About Aldara & How It Help You

February 10th, 2010

Aldara (generic name: Imiquimod) is a topical cream used to treat genital warts: warty growths that are found on the surface of the vulva, the penis, and the anus.  While Aldara does not cure the warts themselves, it may serve to keep the progression of the warty growths at a minimum, although it is possible for new warts to appear even during treatment.  The cream comes in small individual packets that contain enough medication to use approximately three times per week.

In order to get the best results from the use of this cream, follow these simple steps:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after application.
  2. Apply a thin layer of the cream and make sure it is rubbed in completely.
  3. Leave the cream on for 6-10 hours (this is best accomplished by using the cream at night while sleeping) and then remove the cream upon waking by washing the treated area with soap and water.
  4. Apply the cream on an every other day schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday or on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.  If you miss a dose, simply wait until the next scheduled day.  Do not use a double-dose at any time.
  5. Do not apply coverings, bandages, cosmetics, or any other lotions over the cream, as this may lessen Aldara’s effectiveness.
  6. Make sure to keep all your scheduled appointments with your physician in order to evaluate the efficacy of the Aldara cream; the effects of the treatment should be closely monitored.

As with any medication, be sure you inform your physician and pharmacist of any other medications you might be using and any allergies you may have.  Also keep in mind that you should inform your physician right away if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, as this will result in further evaluation on whether the treatment should be continued.  Finally, avoid sexual contact while the cream is actually present on the skin and be sure to not share your Aldara with anyone else.

Store your Aldara at room temperature and in an area free of moisture; also ensure that it is out of reach of children.  Ask your pharmacist how to properly dispose of any unused cream.

There are some potential side effects from the use of Aldara, but they are relatively rare, and should dissipate or disappear totally with time; if they persist, contact your physician.
